The hours that 10.5.2 took

For two days I’ve had lots of problems with the Flex application I’m working on. Mysterious behaviour that doesn’t register any errors anywhere. I couldn’t understand what was going on until today when I accidentally right-clicked on the application. Seconds later my hand collided with my forehead and a long sigh could be heard.

It turns out that the 10.5.2 update for Mac OS X silently installed a new version of Flash Player, overwriting the debug version I had installed. Combined with the Font Explorer X problems and weird glitches and two complete system hangs that also came with the update I can tell you that I’ve lost too many hours of work because of that fucking update.

This “issue” has been hitting our studio for a while now. It’s compounded by our IT dept. who’ll run system updates on the quiet. Usually it ends up in a ripple of “fucking apple…” being grumbled around the office.

Someone should bill them for the lost time….

I have come to find that anytime I get an update from Apple I have to reinstall the debug version of flash player. Over all 10.5.2 has helped me, the Wi-Fi is much better now and a few other things seem to be smoothed out too.

Whenever OS X updates, you can expect to lose your debug player. Usually, Flex Builder will complain but it won’t fix the problem.

This is one of the many reasons that Sprouts (http://www.projectsprouts.org) installs and runs it’s own debug player instead of the installed default.

    Problem solved.

Apart from the pain in the butt factor, its good that apple is getting the the most up to date player out there into the hands of non developer folks to run our applications. Maybe just set up an applescript to install the debug version again.
